School Sport Pathways

The Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn is a unique diocese in that it crosses the NSW and ACT borders. As such there are two different pathways for our students to follow within their sporting endevours.  

ACT

The pathway for a Primary Student in ACT to attend Australian National Championships is as follows:

  • Attends School carnival to gain selection to represent their school.
  • Attends Regional carnival to gain selection into the Regional team.
  • Attends ACT Carnival OR Selection trials to gain selection into the ACT team.
  • Attends School Sport Australia Championships.

The ACT state carnival comprises of the Belconnen Region, North/Gungahlin Region, South/Western Region and Tuggeranong Region.

The pathway for a Secondary Student in ACT to attend Australian National Championships is as follows:

  • Attends School carnival to gain selection to represent their school.
  • Attends Regional carnival to gain selection into the Regional team.
  • Attends ACT Carnival OR Selection trials to gain selection into the ACT team.
  • Attends School Sport Australia Championships.

The ACT State carnival comprises of Northern Region, Southern Region and ASC.

NSW

Canberra Goulburn Trials - Primary

  • Cross Country – 8/9 to 13 years. First 6 students advance to NSWCPS Carnival
  • Athletics – Diocesan 8 – 13 years. First 4 advance from Regional (NR, SR, WR) to the Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn trial/Championships. First 2 students for Primary advance to the MacKillop carnival and First student for Secondary (Some events First 2) advance to the NSWCCC Carnival
  • Swimming – Diocesan 8 – 13 years. First 4 advance from Regional (NR, SR, WR) to the Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn trial/Championships. First 2 students for Primary advance to the MacKillop carnival and First student for Secondary (Some events First 2)
  • Diving No trial 8 – 13 years
  • Summer – Tennis x 8 (4 boys, 4 girls), Boys Cricket x 9, Girls Cricket x 10 (max), Softball (Straight to MacKillop trials), Basketball . Years 5/6 and exceptional younger athletes
  • Touch x 12. Years 5/6 and exceptional younger athletes
  • Winter Trials – 11 and Open league x 17 (Max), netball x 10, soccer x 12, hockey x 12. Years 5/6 and exceptional younger athletes
  • AFL Years 5/6. Trial in Wollongong to form a Canberra/Goublburn-Wollongong team 
  • Girl's AFL - Regional trials
  • Rugby union x 20 (11 and 12-year-olds)
  • Girl's Rugby 7's (Straight to MacKillop trials)
  • Golf trial. Nominations and handicap to attend CPS golf day at Bathurst 18 holes. Gala event for 9 holes.

Entry is submitted by your School Sports Coordinator 

  • NSWCPS Rugby 10-a-side knockout.
    Each NSW Diocese selects one team to represent the Diocese. Canberra Goulburn does not host an interschool sport championships therefore if your school is interested in participating please contact Sherree Bush
  • CPS Hockey Challenge
  • CPS Netball
  • CPS Basketball challenge

MULTI-CLASS

Representative sports opportunities for children with additional needs

The School Sports Representative pathway promotes opportunities for eligible students with a disability between 8 and 13 years of age to compete in selected events in swimming, cross country and athletics.

Students may be able to participate in one or more events as a representative of their school if the student is able to:

  • Swim 50m proficiently in one or more of the 4 strokes – freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly.
  • Proficiently compete in Track and Field – 100m, 200m, 800m, shot put, discus and long jump.
  • Complete a 2 km cross-country course within the specified qualifying time.

The pathway for a Primary student in NSW to attend Australian National Championships is as follows:

  • Attends School carnival to gain selection to school representative team.
  • Attends Regional carnival to gain selection to Regional team.
  • Attends Archdiocesan carnival or Selection Trial to gain selection to Archdiocesan team.
  • Attends MacKillop carnival to gain selection to MacKillop team.
  • Attends NSW PSSA State Championships to gain selection to NSW State team.
  • Attends the School Sport Australia Championship

The NSW State championship comprises 10 DoE Districts, the MacKillop team, the Polding team and Independent Schools Team (CIS).

The pathway for a Secondary student in NSW to attend Australian National Championships is as follows:

  • Attends school carnival to gain selection into school representative team.
  • Attends Archdiocesan Carnival or selection trial to gain selection into Archdiocesan team OR through individual entry/nomination on the CSSS website
  • Attends Combined Catholic Colleges Carnival /Trial to gain CCC selection.
  • Attends NSW All Schools Carnival to gain NSW selection.
  • Attends the School Sport Australia Championship
